(via cowcat): Rules of Typography poster, by Evan Stremke.
So my following rant doesn’t really pertain to typography, but I really like the layout of this poster, which does pertain to rant as follows:
I really, really dislike the new layout of Newsweek. My dad gets a subscription and he saves them for me to read. When I saw the new layout my immediate thought was “This is trying to be like Time, except poorly done.” There’s too much white space. Don’t get me wrong, I love white space. I really do. Writing for/being an editor of my high school paper for 3 years has taught me to really appreciate white space, but Newsweek put in too much of it and it looks really unfocused. The margins are too large and there’s too much space between lines of text. It looks awful. The new typography looks almost “cutesy” and therefore really unprofessional. I get that they’re trying to appeal to a newer/younger audience, but it would be really great if they maintained the feel of a reputable news magazine. I was a huge fan of their previous layout, and liked it tons better than the one they had before that (yes, we’ve been getting subscriptions for that long), but the new one really let me down.
And yes, I just wrote an entire paragraph describing my dislike for the layout of a magazine. Deal.
